Fundamentals of 12-TET Music
While many different tuning systems can be found around the world and throughout history, the most common one in use today is twelve-tone equal temperament, abbreviated 12-TET. In this tuning system, each octave is divided equally into twelve tones.
Die Lautenspielerin [The Lute Player], an 1838 oil painting by Austro-Hungarian artist Friedrich von Amerling. Though not the subject of this work, French lutenist and composer Mlle Bocquet was an early advocate of 12-TET, writing works for lute that explored the full flexibility of the system.
