INDETERMINISM / TEXTURALISM

Sample Project

This sample project for Indeterminism/Texturalism is not intended to be a complete set of directions on how to do the assignment. Its purpose is to provide some information on how to approach the task. The sample project given is not necessarily complete, and there are many ways to arrive at the end product. Do not use any of the choices found below.

  1. Begin by isolating vocal techniques you might use. In this case whispering, singing, shouting, and mumbling.

  2. Make a choice on how to approach "whispering". In this case, each member of the chorus whisper their name (an element of chance), with a crescendo and accelerando (an element of choice). The many voices will create a layer of sound, with the actual names obscured. Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.

Repeatedly whisper your name, starting slowly and softly
    then becoming louder and faster.

  3. Make a choice on how to approach "singing". In this case, sing a high pitch and slide down. There will be a variety of indeterminate pitches (choice), which may or may not eventually merge into one (chance). The performers will determine the dynamic and whether or not there will be a decrescendo (choice). Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.

Sing a high pitch, hold, then
slide down to your lowest pitch.

  4. Make a choice on how to approach "shouting". In this case, members of the chorus shout the syllables of their name staccato (syllables are chance, frequency is choice), gradually placing them closer together. This event will create a sound mass of short punctuations. Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.

Shout each syllable of your name, very short, with a large space between each.
Gradually reduce the amount of space until there is none left.

  5. Make a choice on how to approach "mumbling". In this case, the chorus members repeat their birth date with their lips closed (chance). Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.

Keeping your lips together, repeatedly mumble the day, month, and year you were born.
    Begin loud and become softer.

  6. Organize all these pieces together, adding timings and a structure.
