PRIMITIVISM

Sample Project

This sample project for Primitivism is not intended to be a complete set of directions on how to do the assignment. Its purpose is to provide some information on how to approach the task. The sample project given is not necessarily complete, and there are many ways to arrive at the end product. Do not use any of the choices found below.

  1. Begin by selecting two different tonalities and modalities and an asymmetric meter.

  2. Write a melody in the Primitivistic style in one part.

  3. Write an ostinato in the other part. There must be at least three legs of the ostinato to qualify.

  4. Switch the melody and ostinato (contrapuntal inversion), maintaining the original tonalities and modalities. In this example, there has been melodic inversion as well.

  5. Provide a cadence to bring the piece to a close, confirming the tonalities.

  6. Complete the project with tempo (given with a metronome marking), mood (given with descriptive words), dynamics, and articulations.
