The word calends is the Latin name for the first of each month, and this suite explores the unique impression that each month evokes.

Each season is represented by a "seasonal" instrument:

Overture (String trio)
January (Horn and organ)
February (Clarinet, horn, viola)
March (Horn and string trio)
April (Clarinet and piano)
May (Flute, clarinet, horn)
June (Clarinet and string trio)
July (Flute and harpsichord)
August (Flute, clarinet, viola)
September (Flute and string trio)
October (Viola and guitar)
November (Flute, horn, viola)
December (Flute, clarinet, horn, viola)
Finale (Flute, clarinet, horn, string trio)

Also, each season consists of three instrumental combinations:

Each movement is constructed with a seven-note scale (whole steps with two non-adjacent half steps). There are 14 such arrangements, so each pitch collection is unique to that movement.
