Sing!
It is music for a
sore and soundless world...
(Her voice sings of that still,
stillshimmering
star.)..
It should seem a serene song, so de-
-ep and why-...
(Because,
I knowhy)
-de?
Because... ...suns and sounds; symbols born
so that we may...Sing!

1970

Gestures of joy, gestures of violence,
Jokes to jeers...whatever.
Gestures of sound, and sight, and speech,
Jewels suspended in space...
A glow, a flicker, a glitter, a flame.
Portraits in miniature of the world
Capable of incredible technique:
So blatantly subtle...
So distinctly ambiguous...
So small and mere and mighty...
The earth shudders in the vision...whatever.
A tiny heart-throb
A finger-tap, a shrug
A smile.

1971

Hush!
A baby sleeps.
(Mother and father await.)
Asleep on a cloud between
The two lands of knowing and believing.
(Sister and brother await.)

Feet around him walk with muffled step
So he can rest before his first sight.
Hush!
(Everyone waits for him.)

And a wide-awake world sleeps...

Dear child:
The world awakes
At your awakening.

1972

One line shapes another line...
Line upon line, add shadow
And line comes out
(and in and up and down and)
Outside all is depth and real (and)
Inside is image.
One line shapes another
LINE! Images and shadows.

Up
(and)
Down
IMAGE! Shadows and lines.
Is up (and down and out and in)
Real?

1973

Star of the east, flower of the west!
Both wanderers, and yet both with roots:
Rooted to the sky, rooted to the ground.
And each becomes the other in the garden of
Heaven, the universe of Earth.
Sun-flower, Moon-vine.
Specks in the darkness.
Star of the land, flower of the moon.
Symbols and suns, roses and rays:
Earth-bound and heaven-grown.
Or perhaps they do not exist at all but
In our minds and souls...
Flower of the east,
Star of the west.
