2.4. Larger and Smaller Value Signs

Where confusion is likely to arise about whether the value represented by a note is the larger or smaller (e.g., in the case of the half preceded or followed immediately by a 32nd), the larger ^<1 or smaller ,<1 value sign must be placed before the change of value. Any use of the 256th note or rest requires a value sign for each such passage. (See Sec. 8 regarding grouping of notes of smaller value.)
